Tibetan singing bowls are used worldwide for meditation, music, relaxation and personal well-being. In some Buddhist practices, the singing bowl is used as a signal to begin silent meditation. An antique Tibetan Om singing bowl is decorated with religious iconography and spiritual motifs and symbols. The most revered Tibetan mantra is Om mani padme hum. Mani means 'jewel' or 'grain', Padma means 'lotus flower' which is a sacred flower for Buddhists. The blessing of the mantra is believed to spread when it is engraved or written. The antique Tibetan Om singing bowl has a specific shape and an upturned lip (rounded top edge). This gives a specific density to the sound it emits. Before being inscribed and painted, the Tibetan Singing Bowl is cleaned with a mixture of dyes and firewood ash. It is then placed in a special controlled environment so that the engraved line or design can leave traces behind. All inscriptions and ornaments are handmade. This is a very laborious process.
"Reciting this mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom. The path of the six perfections is a path walked by all the Buddhas of the three times. What then would be more meaningful than saying the mantra out loud and attain the six perfections?” Lama Rinpoche.
Tibetan singing bowls are also called healing bowls. They are made from an alloy of seven different metals linked to seven astrological planets, which create a range of different sounds and hues. The seven metals are: gold, silver, mercury, copper, iron, zinc and brass, and are represented as 7 different planetary influences.
Tibetan singing bowls are still produced today using traditional methods combined with modern techniques. Writing and engraving are done by hand, require special skills and take a lot of time.
